Wayyyyyyyyyyy back in 1986 I bought my last reciever - the >>Pioneer VSX-5000<<

OLD

It has since gone to the great beyond, and I just picked up the H/K AVR-146:
NEW

http://www.harmankardon.com/product_detail.aspx?cat=REC&prod=AVR%20146&sType=

in an effort to

a. get a good reciever for the money
b. use several Best Buy Gift Cards

I fought the newb desire to go after the high watts and instead went for the lower watted/lower THD AVR-146. But now am wondering, what would be a good match speakerwise? I will probably take several months to save up and get them, but would love to hear all of your expert opinions on what would go well with this receiver.

Anyone have a specific? And for down the road, a subwoofer?

Thanks everybody!

Personnally, I don't know if I'd call anything from Best Buy in the "audiophile" class. ;)

But I bought my current HT system there 4 year ago and I'm very pleased with the results, especially considering how much I saved.  A Denon AVR-2807 is my target upgrade.

My HT setup - Sony STR-DE825 (100wx5) AVR, Sony SS-CN295H (5") Center, Sony SS-FM600H (dual-8") x2 Front, Sony SS-MB300H (8") x2 Rear,  Sony SA-WM40 (12" 150w) x2 Powered Sub (yes - dual subs!)

Anyway ...

With a quality receiver you should pair it with quality speakers.

While a great reciever can enhance the sound even from crappy speakers, you won't "hear" anything close to what it can really do unless you get quality speakers to match it.

Otherwise, it'd be like getting an 8800GTX yet still use some old lo-end 17" monitor - you won't be able to "see" what that 8800GTX can really do.

Since you're a fan of Best Buy, you're only real choices are the JBL's or Klipsch speakers.

Unless you want really THUMPING bass, the dual-8" floor speakers will give you good bass, especially ones that are ported.

I would recommend you stick with a single brand for all your speakers.

All the speakers should be match or at least be as close as possible in "Sensitivity".

Depends on how much you want to spend.  I'm a Klipsch fan myself.  They make great speakers.  For the size of your tv room, I'd get something like this:
It a grand for the set.  They have lower priced sets, their Quintet line, but they come sans sub.

As for the new reciever, doe sit go to 11?

Dude... its at least a Harmon and Kardon - not likes its a KLH      ...?

The Audiophile comment was meant to suggest I was looking for advice from audiophiles - not that I was buying
a Carver Mono Amp or anything.

Buying grownup things such as houses and baby clothes means that I have to resolve to buying my A/V at Best Buy - and I'm cool with that, as it seemed like a good way to finally use up my Gift Cards, and move into this century in the A/V Navy.

Thanks for the input lads.

Best bang for the buck, easily:

http://www.hsuresearch.com

I bought the VTF3-MK2 subwoofer (since discontinued, there's a MK3 now) and the VT-12 Ventriloquist speakers. and couldn't be happier. About a grand, total.
